Nixon Equine Vets practice web site gets a "make-over"
Almost exactly 2 years since our new web site launched, we have remodelled it. The logo and colour scheme remain unchanged, but the menu has been streamlined for the benefit of both visitors and search engines. New Advice and News sections have been added to the menu. Intended to provide useful information for horse owners, the Advice section will be added to periodically, so please let us know what additional horse care and management related topics you would like us to cover. An easy to use "mailing list" sign-up and "quick links" to our latest online news and printable practice brochure and newsletter aredisplayed in a new left hand column. We trust you like the new format and welcome your feedback on the changes implemented by our web site designers www.1LG.com.
New Nixon Equine veterinary clinic
Nixon Equine Vets new equine clinic opened on 3rd June 2006. The new equine clinic provides a safe, secure environment for equine in and out-patients and is fully equipped with the latest diagnostic equipment and treatment facilities. An AI unit with chilled and frozen semen facilities is situated in a separate quiet yard. The equine clinic is accessed via an electric gated roadway with a large lorry park with ample turning space situated at the rear, well away from the main road. Partners Stewart Hastie and Jane Nixon live beside the clinic ensuring that there is always an experienced equine veterinary surgeon on site.
RCVS Accreditation "raising the standards"
Less than a year since the decision to focus the practice totally on horses and building a new, fully equipped equine veterinary clinic, Nixon Equine have become one of very few equine veterinary practices to be awarded Tier 2 Equine General Veterinary Practice Accreditation by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Nixon Equine is proud to be an approved member of the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme, which is a voluntary initiative to accredit veterinary practices in the UK.
Equine veterinary diagnosis and performance analysis
Using the latest technology, diagnostics and performance analysis from X-Ray, Ultrasound, Endoscopy, Gastroscopy, Thermography and Equinalysis may be enlarged and viewed on computer imaging equipment, enabling the vet and client to discuss, in detail, the precise nature of a problem and to agree the most appropriate course of action for the horse and the circumstances. Results can also be recorded onto CD for veterinary surgeons, farriers, insurance companies, clients, owners and trainers, or emailed via the Internet instantly for expert veterinary opinion and client advice.
Equine influenza (EI) and FEI competition vaccination 6 monthly rule change
For many years the FEI only required annual EI booster vaccination in horses competing under FEI rules. Recent research however indicates that protection declines after a few months and since 1 January 2005 the rule for horses competing in FEI competition requires an EI vaccination within 6 months + 21 days of competition. Horses competing regularly consequently now require twice yearly boosters. As from 1 January 2006 a system of fines is being imposed by the Appeal Committee / Ground Jury for failure to comply with 6-month booster vaccinations.
Jane Nixon sits on British Dressage selectors' panel for the London 2012 Olympics
In late 2006 Horse and Hound magazine reported that Jane Nixon has been invited to sit on the British Dressage selectors' panel as veterinary advisor for potential elite dressage horses for the 2012 London Olympics and beyond. In addition to Jane Nixon in her capacity as equine veterinarian, chief of selectors David Trott is joined on the panel by top dressage riders Carl Hester, Emile Faurie, training manager Ferdi Eilberg, plus German elite dressage trainer Jan Bemelmans. David Trott says 'we are looking for horses between 4 and 8 who already show talent for Grand Prix dressage movements, whose trainer believes that the horse is at least as good, if not better, than those in our last Olympic dressage team'. The 'Equine Pathway' panel has asked international trainers and judges to recommend horses with these attributes. So if you have a potential Olympic dressage horse at home in your stable, make sure you contact Jane Nixon at Nixon Equine Vets on 01280 813258 or email her at Jane@nixonequinevets.co.uk.
Sarcoids and carbon dioxide laser surgery treatment
Sarcoids can affect any breed of horse and are a cause for pre-purchase examination failure. Sarcoids can interfere with tack, rendering affected animals unable to work and as the most common form of equine skin tumour, sarcoids may even necessitate euthanasia. Nixon Equine is excited to announce it is now able to offer carbon dioxide laser surgery for the treatment of sarcoids. Laser surgery has been found to be extremely successful for not only removing these tumours but also minimising the risk of re-occurrence. For more information call Nixon Equine on 01280 813258 Monday - Saturday 8 - 9 am or email info@nixonequinevets.co.uk.
